What is your favourite thing about Sound/ What makes Sound special?
What I most enjoy about Sound School is the children, hearing them laugh on a cinema night, the fantastic achievement of ALL the children (no matter how small) and the fact they enjoy attending Sound. There are many factors that make our school so special, but one of the main factors is the great staff we have that hold and promote the values of the school and believe in the children.
What is your background and why did you want to be a governor?
Two questions really. I studied Medicine at Aberdeen University, moved into a career in IT a few years later, initially at Aberdeen University, then for a major IT service provider. Spent part of my career as an IT trainer, an IT developer, and now I manage a team developing IT solutions.
We have a fantastic school, and as a parent I thought I should do my bit to help the school continue to achieve, so I got involved with the PTA, planning and running events, went on to be chair (of the PTA), and was invited by the then governing board to join. I had no hesitation in saying yes. I might only play a tiny part in the work that the school does, but it is a wonderful feeling being a tiny cog in a school that has such a massive impact on the lives of our children.
What are your governor responsibilities?
I am the current chair of governors, which is a complex and multi-faceted role. I lead the governing board to ensure it fulfils its functions well. That it focuses is on vision and strategy, I advise and shape proposals to be discussed at the board meetings. I aim to facilitate the board in working as a team to challenge, support and contribute to the strategic leadership of the school. At times I am a confidante, a manager, a critical friend, a cheerleader, an ambassador, an arbitrator, and coach.
I am also the Training Liaison governor. Collating the training needs and activities of the governing board, and identifying any skill gaps in the board.
I continue in my role as link governor.

I first visited Sound and District Primary School around 20 years ago as part of my work with the Behaviour Support Service ; my memories from that time have stayed with me. Two years ago I retired, after 40 years of working in and with schools, but I still wanted to be part of education; I am so pleased therefore to be a governor at Sound and District School. I have a lot of knowledge from the different roles I have undertaken over the years, and a passion for supporting children to thrive, be safe, enjoy school and achieve to be the best they can be. I am really looking forward to using that knowledge and passion in my role as governor and being part of the school’s journey.

2 of our 3 children currently attend Sound school & District having moved from another Nantwich school. It was the best decision we’ve made and can see how much they currently enjoy their learning.
