Welcome to Year 3/4

In Opal class, we take pride in being well-mannered and kind. By being friendly and helpful, we make our class a great place to learn and play together.
Reading
Your child will be given a reading book and diary to take home and read. Please ensure that these are in your child’s book bag every day. It is really important that your child reads as much as possible. We ask that your child reads for 15 minutes each night. Your child will also have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books throughout the week in school.
PE
Currently, our PE days are Monday and Thursday. Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit on these days. During the winter, children should have both tracksuit bottoms and shorts, as we could be outside come rain or snow! Girls should bring tracksuit bottoms too, as they are not to wear tights underneath shorts.
Playtime
Our playtime is now from 10:30 to 10:50. We will be using the playground, field, and climbing equipment, so please ensure that your children have a change of shoes ready for playtime.
Homework
Our homework is set on a Friday and is due back the following Friday. The children are expected to read for 15 minutes each night and complete an Accelerated Reader quiz each week. They are also given Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) homework to complete throughout the week in short, consistent bursts.
Spellings will be handed out each week on a Friday to be tested on the following Friday. If a large portion of the class struggles, the spellings may be extended to allow more time to practice.
Volunteers
At Sound, we always welcome volunteers to come and read with the children, work alongside the class, or even volunteer for clubs or special activities. If this is of interest to you, don’t hesitate to speak to the office or the class teacher, and they will point you in the right direction.
At the start of the academic year, parents and carers are invited to our ‘Meet the teacher’ session which welcomes you to your child’s new year group and sets out key information for the coming year. The attached PowerPoint was used as part of the meeting for Opal Class. Please get in touch if you have any further questions or queries. Many thanks!
Dear Year 4 Parents and Carers,
You may be aware that Year 4 children across the country are now required to take part in The Multiplication Tables Check. This is a formal assessment that happens at the beginning of June. The children will be tested on their times tables up to 12 x 12, and all children will take the test using an iPad. There is no set pass mark. However, secure and rapid knowledge of times tables facts is beneficial in many areas of maths taught in KS2 and will help the children as they move towards their end of KS2 SATs.
Many of the children are now practising their times tables using TT Rockstars, and it is really helping with their progress. Usernames and passwords for this are in the front of your child’s reading diary. We recommend that the children practise four times a week for ten minutes. It is so important to get as much practice as possible because this knowledge will also be a big help with their maths lessons.

Happy multiplying!
