    Equality Statement

    Sound and District Primary School

At Sound and District Primary School, we are committed to promoting equality, inclusion and respect for all. Public bodies, including schools, have a duty under the Equality Act 2010 to promote equality, and this statement sets out how we fulfil that responsibility.

We firmly believe that every individual has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. This principle is integral to our school ethos and underpins all that we do.

    Our Legal Duties

Under the Equality Act 2010, we have due regard to the need to:

    • Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation
    • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
    • Foster good relations between people from different backgrounds and with different characteristics

It is unlawful for a school to discriminate against a pupil or prospective pupil, or a person associated with them, on the basis of:

    • Sex
    • Race
    • Disability
    • Religion or belief
    • Sexual orientation
    • Gender reassignment
    • Pregnancy or maternity

It is also unlawful to discriminate based on a perceived characteristic, even if this perception is incorrect.

While age is a protected characteristic in employment and services, it does not apply to pupils in schools.

    Our Commitment

We recognise and celebrate the uniqueness of every individual. We aim to provide a safe, inclusive and prejudice-free environment, where no member of our community is discriminated against, harassed or victimised due to their characteristics, circumstances or beliefs.

We believe that equality is achieved through understanding, respect and valuing diversity. All individuals are part of one human community and deserve equal status and opportunity.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    Governors

Our Governing Body is responsible for:

    • Support all pupils to make strong progress from their individual starting points

    • Work collaboratively with parents and external professionals to remove barriers to learning

    All Staff

    All staff are expected to:

    • Promote equality and inclusion in all aspects of school life
    • Lead by example in their conduct and interactions

Our pupils are supported and encouraged to:

    • Understand, respect and celebrate differences
