    ONYX CLASS
    Welcome to Years 6!

Welcome to our Year 6 class page! This is an exciting final year of primary school filled with challenge, achievement, and memorable experiences.

Hello! I am Mrs Wagg and I am the Year 6 teacher.

Our amazing teaching assistant is Miss Davies.

This is Our Year 6 Classroom:

    Reading

In Onyx Class, we really promote a love of reading, taking every opportunity to share, read and engage with a range of texts across the curriculum as well as for pure enjoyment! The children in Year 6 are on Accelerated Reader, and your child will always have a reading book, as well as a diary to record and track home and school reading. Children need to remember to bring their reading book and diary to school every day. It is really important that your child reads as much as possible. We ask that your child reads at least 5 times a week, even if it’s just for 5 minutes. Your child will also have frequent independent reading time throughout the week in school when they can quiz the book they have finished, alternatively they can complete a quiz first thing in the morning. For reaching their own individual target there is always a reading treat at the end of each term.

    Spelling

Each week, on a Friday, the children are given a new spelling rule to practice and learn. The following Friday, the children will be given a quiz to see if they can apply the rule to increase the accuracy of their spelling. Please ensure that your child practises the rule throughout the week as this is also part of their homework.

    Friction Pens

In Onyx Class, it is expected that ALL pupils use legible, neat joined up handwriting in ALL areas of the curriculum. Each child needs their own blue Friction pen.

    Diaries

Each child has their own diary. These diaries can be used to communicate a message from parents or staff and needs to be in school every day. These diaries are also used for children to record their daily reading as well as including spelling rules, spelling quiz results, test results, targets, Accelerated Reader quiz results etc.

    Homework

Every Friday, the children will bring home homework in addition to their reading and spelling rule. Homework will be based on classwork, so all children should already be familiar with what to do. Please ensure that high standards are maintained when your child is completing work at home. All written work should be completed in friction pen and presented neatly.

Homework time is also a great opportunity to build independence. By setting a regular time, providing a quiet, distraction-free workspace, and checking their work afterwards, you will help your child develop responsibility and independence in their learning.

Homework should be returned by the following Wednesday at the latest.

    PE

Onyx class PE is on a Wednesday and Friday. Please send your children into school wearing their PE kit on both days.   During the Winter, children should have both tracksuit bottoms and shorts as we could be outside come rain or snow!

    Playtime

During playtime, the children can use the field.  Please ensure your child has a change of footwear in a named plastic bag and a pair of tracksuit bottoms to change into if they want to go on the field.

    Volunteers

At Sound, we always welcome volunteers to come and read with the children, work alongside the class or even volunteer for clubs or special activities. If this is of interest to you, don’t hesitate to speak to the office or the class teacher and they will point you in the right direction.
